MOSCOW, April 14 – RIA Novosti. Using public Wi-Fi networks is unsafe because attackers can gain access to the transmitted data. Karen Ghazaryan, chief analyst of the Russian Association for Electronic Communications, explained in an interview with Sputnik radio how to secure the connection.
The main problem is that the basic model for providing Wi-Fi services in public places assumes that all unencrypted data that you transmit is visible to other users, at that moment connected to the same public spot, the expert explained. “Thus, if you have some sensitive data transmitted over an unencrypted channel, then an attacker can intercept them with the help of special programs,” said Karen Ghazaryan.
There are several rules that must be followed in order to secure your activity on a public Wi-Fi network, the expert noted. So, you should not enter sensitive information, for example, go to the Internet bank or other important services. The expert advises using applications with built-in traffic encryption, or resorting to virtual private network (VPN) services to hide outgoing data from outsiders.
“Of course, most services use an encrypted connection by themselves, but there is a certain risk. It is recommended to use a VPN when working with public Wi-Fi, or not to enter any sensitive information into any forms. You should not enter passwords, banking information, and so on, “advised Karen Ghazaryan in an interview with Sputnik radio.
