The aggravation of the situation in the Ladakh border region began in early May 2020, when a number of conflicts between the military of India and China took place in the Pangong Lake area, after which both countries strengthened their military presence in the region. In early February, first the Chinese, and then the Indian Ministry of Defense announced the withdrawal of forces along the northern and southern shores of Lake Pangong. During this time, the military of the two countries withdrew advanced troops, tanks, infantry fighting vehicles and artillery pieces from strategic heights along the shores of the lake in accordance with an agreement reached earlier this month. Also dismantled were military structures erected after last year's clashes in the Pangong sector.
