MOSCOW, April 4 – RIA Novosti. Political scientist Ivan Mezyukho commented on the statement of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Ruslan Khomchak, who called the country's army “the shield of Europe.”
Earlier, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Ruslan Khomchak, in honor of the 72nd anniversary of the formation of NATO, called for joining the alliance.
Mezyuho called the statement of the Ukrainian military dubious and unfounded. “Not a single such loud statement will change NATO's position on Ukraine in the near historical future,” he said in an interview with RT.
The political scientist recalled corruption scandals in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as well as problems with discipline and supplies in the Ukrainian army, and stressed that both Kiev and NATO are aware of this.
The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine in December 2014 amended two laws, abandoning the non-aligned status of the state. Five years later, the deputies adopted amendments to the constitution, consolidating the country's course in the EU and NATO. Ukraine became the sixth state to receive the status of a partner of the Enhanced Opportunity Alliance. However, according to experts, in the coming years, membership in the bloc will not threaten Kiev.
