MOSCOW, April 4 – RIA Novosti. The President of the Russian Cynological Federation Vladimir Golubev told RIA Novosti how to help a dog survive melancholy if its owner has left for a long time or died, as well as how such a condition threatens the animal itself. “If the owner suddenly left the pet for a long time for some reason, it will make him The animal may begin to bark, behave anxious and nervous, some even refuse to eat and walk. In one dog this is less pronounced, in the other more, “he said.
In any case, this is a rather dangerous condition, noted Golubev, from which the dog needs to be removed as quickly as possible.
“Do not be intrusive and do not insist on games and petting, but do not leave the animal alone in this state. When the dog is yearning for the owner, try to surround him with care and love. So the dog will understand that he is still loved. During this period, you need to show patience and responsiveness to the wishes of the dog, “he said.
According to the dog handler, if there is such an opportunity, it is better to leave the dog to live in its usual place, since the move will only cause new stress from unfamiliar objects and smells. If the guardian or the new owner still needs to take the dog with him, then things familiar to the animal should be taken from the old house: favorite toys, a carrier and a bed.
“The dog will feel calmer if there are several things with the owner's smell nearby, for example, his T-shirt or sweater,” Golubev said.
Active games and long walks, interesting walking areas, squeaky toys and toys-treats will help to brighten up the melancholy. The more such leisure a dog has, the less time it will have to be sad, the expert noted.
“You can let the pet entertain itself on its own. For this, specialized toys are suitable. They will help to solve two main tasks: they will occupy the dog during the absence of the owner and will contribute to its mental development,” he said.
The cynologist advises not to overdo it with delicacies, despite the possible desire to dispel the sadness of the sad dog with the help of delicious food. “You should not overfeed your dog. It is important for a pet to get a complete diet. Treats should make up a minimum portion of the daily diet, since most of them do not contain minerals and nutrients,” he explained.
If the melancholy persists over time, you should consult a veterinarian, advises Golubev.
“It so happens that the pet is very upset by separation from the owner, refusing to play, petting, eating and walking. This condition is very dangerous and can lead to death. The pet's body at this moment is subjected to severe stress and hormonal changes. If all else fails, it is best to consult a veterinarian. Perhaps he will prescribe anti-anxiety and immunity-supporting medications. In severe cases, this is most effective, “- he concluded.
