MOSCOW, April 2 – RIA Novosti. Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs Alexei Chepa responded to the statement by German Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer about “growing challenges” for Europe because of Russia.
Earlier, Kramp-Karrenbauer said that high defense spending is important for Germany not in order to “render a service to the United States,” but to respond to the growing challenges caused by Russia's actions. Among those, she named the emergence of new technologies and “hybrid threats.” “I don’t think Germany views our actions as hostile. If our science and technology stood still, they would be more satisfied with it,” Chepa said in an interview with RT.
The deputy stressed that the development of the Russian military potential is aimed at strengthening the national defense. He recalled that NATO is approaching the borders of our country.
“We should not stand still and not develop our military equipment forward when the United States, Germany and other countries are doing it,” the parliamentarian added.
Chepa suggested that Western countries will take “certain steps” if they are afraid of Russia's activity in this direction.
Earlier, NATO accused Moscow of “aggressive behavior” and declared the need to contain it. The Foreign Ministry said that Russia will take into account the mood of the alliance in its foreign policy and military planning. The Kremlin noted that Moscow does not threaten anyone, but will not disregard actions potentially dangerous to its interests.
