MOSCOW, April 2 – RIA Novosti. Russian politicians and experts have assessed the statement of the French Foreign Ministry that the completion of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline raises concerns in Paris. Read more in the material of RIA Novosti.
Earlier, Secretary of State Clement Bon said that Paris and Berlin have differences over the project. The diplomat also recalled the position of Emmanuel Macron, who said that Nord Stream 2 creates Europe's dependence on Russia.
Sergei Tsekov, a member of the Federation Council committee on international affairs, in an interview with RT, suggested that Paris and Berlin would nevertheless develop a common vision of the situation.
“Why did Turkish Stream and Nord Stream appear? Just in order to guarantee gas supplies to Europe and increase these supplies, if necessary,” the senator said.
Tsekov noted that the project has economic benefits. He added that it is important for Russia to be a bona fide supplier.
“Constant talk about what is necessary or not necessary, alertness – this does not really paint the states of the European Union,” he added.
The parliamentarian stressed that Russia is a reliable partner and called on the Europeans to be the same.
The threat of stagnation
Without energy supplies from Russia, the economies of Western countries will stagnate, deputy of the lower house of parliament Artem Turov told Duma TV.
“The supplies of Russian energy resources reliably ensure the economies of European countries. This was both during the Soviet Union and modern Russia,” the parliamentarian said.
He stated that Russia is a reliable supplier, and added that without a new gas pipeline, the economies of European countries will stop growing.
The MP stressed that this is especially true for Germany, which plans to abandon nuclear power plants in the future.
Sergei Fedorov, a leading researcher at the Institute of Europe of the Russian Academy of Sciences, in turn, listed the factors due to which Paris and Berlin have different attitudes towards the gas pipeline project.
In an interview with Sputnik radio, the expert noted that France is less dependent on Russian gas.
“Deliveries there are significantly lower – this is a fact,” he said.
The second reason is the fears of Paris due to the strengthening of the economic power of Berlin in the event of the launch of Nord Stream 2, Fedorov is sure.
“This gives advantages to the already leader of the European Union – Germany – in the economic sphere, and in the political one too,” the expert explained.
As a third reason, he named Macron's desire for “European sovereignty” and fears that the pipeline will become a divisive factor within the European Union.
“Since it is known that the Russophobic countries – Poland, the Baltic countries and their sympathizers – support the American line, this introduces discord into the already discordant ranks of the EU,” Fyodorov summed up.

Gas pipeline project
Nord Stream 2 envisages the construction of two lines of the gas pipeline with a total capacity of 55 billion cubic meters per year. The highway connects Russia and Germany along the bottom of the Baltic Sea, passing through the territorial waters or the exclusive economic zones of Finland, Sweden and Denmark.
The United States, which is promoting its liquefied natural gas to European countries, opposes the project. Washington, with the help of sanctions, is trying to prevent its implementation, but Nord Stream 2 is almost completed, and they intend to commission it this year.
Russia has repeatedly stated that this project is commercial and beneficial to Europe. In Germany, they support the completion of the gas pipeline and reject unilateral extraterritorial US sanctions. Infographics
