MOSCOW, 17 Mar – RIA Novosti. Senator Oleksiy Pushkov commented on the statement of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky on the occasion of the anniversary of the referendum on the annexation of the peninsula to Russia.
Zelensky said on Tuesday that Kiev will not abandon the region and has prepared a “strategy for the de-occupation and reintegration of the peninsula.” At the same time, he called the referendum held in Crimea “fake”.
“It was not the referendum in Crimea in 2014 that was fake – Zelensky himself was and is fake, promising, as a presidential candidate, one thing, but doing something completely different,” Pushkov wrote on his Twitter.
According to him, because of this, the level of support for Zelensky in Ukraine fell fourfold. “And his Crimean Platform is doomed to failure,” the senator added.
Crimea became a Russian region after a referendum held there in March 2014, in which 96.77% of the voters of the Republic of Crimea and 95.6% of Sevastopol residents spoke in favor of joining Russia. Ukraine still considers Crimea to be its own, but temporarily occupied territory. Kiev announced plans to discuss the issue of “returning” the peninsula at the summit of the “Crimean Platform”, scheduled for 23 August.
The Russian leadership has repeatedly stated that the inhabitants of Crimea democratically, in full compliance with international law and the UN Charter, voted for reunification with Russia. According to Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Crimea issue is “finally closed.”
