SUKHUM, 15 Mar – RIA Novosti. The cassation board of the Supreme Court of Abkhazia refused to overturn the decision to detain ex-DPR commander and former assistant to the President of Abkhazia Akhra Avidzba, who is accused of illegal possession of firearms, RIA Novosti correspondent reports from the courtroom.
The meeting was held on the basis of an appeal by Avidzba's lawyer Inga Gabilaya on the legality of her client's detention. She turned to the Cassation Board of the Supreme Court of the Republic with a request to appoint him a preventive measure not related to imprisonment.
Earlier it was reported that the Sukhumi city court arrested Akhru Avidzba and his guards Galekh Hasanov, Aslan Guatizhev, Stanislav Kult and Andrei Loktionov for one month for illegal possession of weapons. In relation to another of the guards, Vladimir Shcherbakov, a preventive measure not related to imprisonment was chosen. The State Security Service of Abkhazia stated that the detainees planned to participate in the coup.
“The ruling of the Sukhum city court should be left unchanged,” said the chairman of the Cassation Board Mimoza Tsushba.
Avidzba's lawyer told RIA Novosti that she would appeal the decision in the presidium of the Supreme Court.
Avidzba, who announced the creation of his own political movement, was detained on March 4 and brought for interrogation to the State Security Service of Abkhazia. Later, law enforcement officers reported that, together with Avidzba, five people who are not citizens of the country were detained, and firearms and ammunition were found in his house. A criminal case was initiated against them on illegal possession of weapons by prior conspiracy. The punishment under this article is imprisonment for a term of two to six years. From the first day of his detention, Avidzba, according to his defense, refused food and water.
Avidzba has been a participant in hostilities in eastern Ukraine since 2014. He created the international detachment “Pyatnashka” and became its first commander. He took part in the battles for Saur-Mogila, Ilovaisk, Maryinka, as well as in the Debaltsevo area and at the Donetsk airport. In 2020, Avidzba became one of the initiators of the January rally in Sukhum, as a result of which the President of Abkhazia, Raul Khadzhimba, resigned. The next head of the republic was Aslan Bzhania, Avidzba was appointed his assistant for international relations. Later, he resigned from this position “due to the loss of faith” to work as part of the Bzhania team.
