MOSCOW, March 14 – RIA Novosti. The British tank “Challenger-2” in its current form has a number of critical flaws that cannot be eliminated within the framework of the current platform, in particular, an outdated weapon of a combat vehicle is ineffective against other modern tanks, but there is nothing to replace the “Challenger”, so the British are planning “palliative” measures modernization, a military expert, editor-in-chief of Arsenal Otechestvo, Viktor Murakhovsky, told RIA Novosti.
As noted earlier in the Defense Committee of the House of Commons of the British Parliament, in the event of an armed conflict with Russia, the battle of tank units is likely to end not in favor of Great Britain. The report cites obsolete armored vehicles as the reason.
“The Challenger 2 main battle tank, which is in service with the British Army, does have a number of critical shortcomings in terms of the requirements of modern combat operations with an equal adversary. These shortcomings cannot be eliminated within the framework of the current platform. But there is nothing to replace it with, so the British are planning palliative measures. modernization “, – said the expert.
According to him, an obsolete 120-millimeter rifled gun was installed on the British vehicle, which makes it possible to use a range of ammunition with insufficient impact power on highly protected targets. “In fact, it is ineffective against most modern tanks in frontal projection, where they have maximum protection,” the expert said.
Murakhovsky added that in this aspect, the Challenger-2 “loses not only to our smooth-bore 125 mm caliber guns capable of using guided projectiles, but also to most foreign counterparts.”
Also, the “Challenger-2” uses a separate-cap loading, using separate ignition tubes that ignite the propellant charge, which greatly complicates the loader's work. “In the absence of an automatic loader, as on our tanks, this leads to a low combat rate of fire, especially on the move over rough terrain,” the specialist added.
Another problem with the Challenger is an outdated fire control system, in which, for example, there is no automatic target tracking, which is already common for modern tanks. “All our modern vehicles have an automatic tracking machine. And the T-14 Armata fire control system not only automatically accompanies targets, it can search for and identify them on its own without the participation of the crew,” the expert noted.
According to Murakhovsky, the British car has low mobility characteristics due to its low power density of only 19 horsepower per ton. “For comparison: the latest version of the Russian T-72B3 has a power density of more than 24 horsepower per ton,” said the chief editor of Arsenal Otechestvo.
The hydropneumatic suspension of the British tank also requires replacement, since its capabilities are at the limit in terms of tank weight. With additional armor and equipment attached in combat conditions, it demonstrated poor reliability and did not provide an acceptable smoothness.
“Earlier, for these British tanks, a modernization unit LEP (Life Extension Project) was developed, with the help of which the British hoped to solve the listed problems. The program involves the installation of a new smoothbore gun, a new fire control system and a more powerful engine of 1.5 thousand horsepower. However, the project has not yet been implemented, which, obviously, was the reason for the publication of such a harsh report by the Defense Committee of the British Parliament, containing direct criticism of the UK Department of Defense, “the expert summed up.
