Two people died on Saturday in Hong Kong after being vaccinated against COVID-19, both suffered from chronic diseases and were hospitalized after being vaccinated against coronavirus in early March, according to a statement on the website of the city's health department.
The department said an 80-year-old man with diabetes and hypertension has died. He had also previously suffered a stroke. The cause of death was named ischemic bowel disease. The man was vaccinated against COVID-19 on March 1, and on March 7 he was admitted to the intensive care unit of Princess Margaret Hospital in critical condition, where he died.
The second case is a 67-year-old man with hyperlipidemia, diabetes and hypertension. He got the Coronavac vaccine on March 2. Then, on March 11, the man suddenly passed out at one of the subway stations and was admitted to the Kwong Wah Hospital. The patient died on March 13th.
Earlier, the health department announced an investigation into the deaths of a 63-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman who suffered from chronic diseases and died after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine, which they received on March 2. The media wrote that the patients were injected with the Sinovac vaccine. At the same time, the South China Morning Post writes that the number of deaths after vaccination with this drug has reached six.
Hong Kong's COVID-19 vaccination program officially kicked off on February 26. According to the ministry, as of March 13, about 177 thousand people received the first dose of the coronavirus vaccine in the city, of which about 149,200 people were vaccinated with the Sinovac vaccine, about 27,800 – with the Comirnaty vaccine developed by Pfizer-BioNTech.
The new deaths following the coronavirus vaccine have come amid fears that the city is facing a fifth wave of the epidemic as 47 new cases have been identified, most of which are associated with a gym in the Sai Ying Pun area. In total, during the epidemic in Hong Kong, 11,257 cases of infection were detected, 203 people became victims of the disease.
