Police cordon off Armenian Foreign Ministry building over protests

YEREVAN, 13 Mar – RIA Novosti. The police cordoned off the building of the Armenian Foreign Ministry on Saturday because of a protest in connection with the planned arrival of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, RIA Novosti correspondent reports.

Earlier, the united opposition called on its supporters to gather at the Foreign Ministry building on March 13, stating that Pashinyan was going to go there. “We will meet him in front of the building of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in order to once again voice our demand -” Armenia without Nikola, “says the Facebook page of the opposition Movement to Save the Motherland.

Another political crisis erupted in Yerevan after Pashinyan's careless words about the Russian Iskander missile systems. According to media reports, the Deputy Chief of the General Staff of Armenia Tiran Khachatryan ridiculed the Prime Minister, for which he was dismissed, followed by the proposal to resign, Chief of the General Staff Onik Gasparyan. The Armed Forces of Armenia issued a statement in which they demanded the resignation of Pashinyan himself. The prime minister regarded this as an attempted coup and called on his supporters to take to the streets. In the meantime, the opposition has erected barricades and set up a campground near the parliament, they are not in the mood for negotiations with the authorities and are demanding the resignation of the prime minister.
