On Friday, Bolivia's special anti-corruption prosecutor's office issued arrest warrants against ten federal government officials, including former Interior Minister Arturo Murillo, ex-presidential chief of staff Yerko Nunez and ex-President Jeanine Agnes, who are accused of terrorism, treason and conspiracy.
After the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs announced the detention of the ex-president, Agnes on Twitter accused the current authorities of political persecution. “I declare to Bolivia and the whole world that the leadership of the Movement to Socialism, committing an act of violence and political persecution, ordered my arrest. in participation in the coup, which did not take place. Earlier, in the north of the country, two ministers of the Agnes government – justice and energy – were detained. According to the police, the ex-heads of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Ministry of Defense left the country at the end of 2020 and were in Brazil.
At the end of October 2020, the Bolivian parliament demanded a judicial investigation against Agnes, accusing her of genocide, the politician herself considers herself innocent. The parliament also recommended starting criminal proceedings against 11 ministers and ex-ministers for human rights violations, when 26 people were killed, hundreds of people were injured and arrested during the protests after the presidential elections in 2019.
