MOSCOW, March 13 – RIA Novosti. Georgy Goncharov, a leading researcher at the Pulkovo Astronomical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences, told Zvezda how dangerous the largest and fastest asteroid 2001 FO32 approaching Earth is.
According to him, it is not him that should be feared, but celestial bodies located at a distance of the Moon – more than 384 thousand kilometers. “The speed of all bodies at a certain distance from the Sun is rigidly determined precisely by the movement around the Sun, it should be about 30 kilometers per second and strongly cannot vary from this value “, – the specialist believes.
Discovered in March 2001, the near-Earth asteroid from the Apollo 2001 group FO32 has a diameter of 914 meters. As it approaches the Earth, it will move at an unusually high speed – about 124 thousand kilometers per hour. It will fly about two million kilometers away and will become the largest asteroid to approach our planet this year.
