Turkey produces parts for the F-35, despite the exclusion from the project

ANKARA, 11 Mar – RIA Novosti. Turkey continues to produce components for the latest American F-35 fighters, despite the fact that the United States excluded it from this project due to the purchase of Russian S-400 air defense systems, the Minister of Industry and Technology of the Republic Mustafa Varank told RIA Novosti.

“We are currently excluded from the F-35 project. The most significant parts for the F-35 project are now produced by Turkey, some parts are produced only by Turkey. That is, if these parts are not produced in Turkey, the production of these aircraft becomes impossible in principle. But we in no way violate our obligations. In Turkey, the production of these parts is still ongoing, “the source said.

According to him, Turkey is awaiting correction of the injustice committed against her in the F-35 project and did not suspend work due to the fact that she was excluded from the project.

“On the issue of the defense industry, the situation of external dependence is categorically unacceptable for us … We managed to bring the share of domestic production from 20 to 70%,” Varank said.

Now, on many projects, situations arise when Turkey is faced with the problem of a hidden or explicit embargo, but the country does not want to live in crisis conditions and has set itself the goal of becoming a self-sufficient country “producing the highest quality technologies in the world and selling them,” the minister added.

Deliveries of the latest Russian S-400 air defense systems, which caused a crisis in Turkey's relations with the United States, began in mid-July 2019. Washington demanded to abandon the deal and purchase American Patriot systems in return, threatening to delay or even cancel the sale of the latest F-35 fighters to Turkey, as well as to impose sanctions in accordance with CAATSA (the law “On Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions”). Ankara refused to make concessions and continued negotiations on an additional batch of S-400s.
