MOSCOW, March 10 – RIA Novosti. Ukrainian soils, which are considered the main national treasure of the country, are threatened with degradation due to their long-term irresponsible exploitation by agricultural producers. The government edition “Uryadovy kuryer” writes about this with reference to specialists from the Institute of Geography of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
Agricultural producers, experts say, prefer crops that are profitable, but deplete the soil: corn, rapeseed, soybeans. The share of such crops in Ukraine in 2017-2020 increased by almost three percent and now exceeds fifty percent.
Overly active exploitation of soils causes not only their degradation, experts emphasize. The quality of ground and surface waters is deteriorating, which, in turn, causes siltation of water bodies and the destruction of aquatic flora and fauna.
Analysts also note that almost a third of all agricultural land in Ukraine is concentrated in the hands of large agricultural holdings. This situation, experts say, is typical for countries where there are negative factors: weakness and imperfection of legislation, insufficient control over its observance, a low level of civil society development, and government corruption.
To solve the problem, experts urge the Verkhovna Rada to immediately adopt a bill on the reform of the state environmental control system, which contains elements of land use.
