Research: Pfizer vaccine neutralizes Brazilian COVID-19 strain

MOSCOW, March 10 – RIA Novosti. The Pfizer / BioNTech coronavirus vaccine in vitro was able to neutralize the Brazilian strain, according to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The study was conducted by vaccine developers from both companies in collaboration with scientists from the University of Texas. For the study, blood samples were taken from participants in the final stage of clinical trials of the vaccine, who had already received two vaccinations with the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine. As it turned out, antibodies appeared in their blood, capable of neutralizing new strains. “Thus, comparing with neutralization (vaccine of the virus isolate circulated in January 2020) USA-WA1 / 2020, neutralization (British – ed.) Of strain B.1.1. 7 and the (Brazilian) P.1 strain are about the same; the neutralization of the B.1.351 (South African – Ed.) Strain is slightly lower, “the study said.

Earlier, pharmaceutical companies Pfizer and BioNTech announced the start of trials on the efficacy and safety of the third dose of their coronavirus vaccine. The announcement follows a statement from Microsoft founder Bill Gates about the likely need for a third dose of coronavirus vaccine due to new strains.
