The service is available only at self-service cash registers of our own design X5. After summing up the results of the first stage of the “pilot” and receiving feedback from buyers, a decision will be made to scale the technology in all regions of the retailer's presence.
Igor Shekhterman, CEO of X5, noted that the biometric identification and payment technology has been successfully tested as part of a pilot project and is ready to be deployed in X5 retail chains. “Biometrics is becoming a standard feature and will soon be available to millions of our customers across Russia,” said Shekhterman, quoted in the post.
Kirill Tsarev, Deputy Chairman of the Board, Head of the Retail Business Block of Sberbank, pointed out that using the new service does not require cash, bank card, or smartphone: it is enough to show your face and the payment will take place. “I am convinced that very soon contactless biometric payment solutions will be used everywhere and such a payment method will become as common as paying with a bank card or smartphone,” he said.
According to Mikhail Berner, general director of Visa in Russia, the company's research shows a high interest of Russians in this type of biometric identification: 70% of buyers plan to pay with their face in the future. “Interestingly, 54% of Russian consumers consider contactless payment to be one of the most effective methods of protecting against COVID while shopping,” Berner added.
