MOSCOW, March 10 – RIA Novosti. At least 29 people have died in a militant attack on a church in Ethiopia's Oromia region, local newspaper Addis Standard reported.
Eyewitnesses told the newspaper that the attack took place on March 5 in the East Wellega area. Unidentified persons attacked the building of the temple when the parishioners of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church celebrated the beginning of the fast. The abbot of this temple was killed in the attack, the newspaper writes.
According to a local resident, the attackers belonged to the fighting wing of the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF). Among the dead, 21 were women, some of whom were with babies. The militants took the women into the forest, where their bodies were later found. One of the women was able to escape from captivity.
The Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) was on the Ethiopian terrorist list until July 2018. The country's authorities decided to exclude him from the list, as the front declared its readiness to participate in the political life of the country, resorting exclusively to peaceful means.
