A heavy fighter-interceptor MiG-31BM during exercises in the Arctic intercepted an intruder plane of a mock enemy trying to break into Russian airspace at high altitude and supersonic, the second MiG-31 acted as the intruder, the press service of Vostochny told reporters. “The crews of the MiG-31BM fighters of the Pacific Fleet naval aviation, which are on duty on air defense in Chukotka, conducted exercises to intercept an aircraft violating the border of the Russian Federation in airspace in the Arctic Circle,” the press service said.
One of the MiG-31BM fighters of the Pacific Fleet naval aviation acted as the intruder. “His crew was faced with the task at supersonic speed, at an altitude of about 20 kilometers, to penetrate the airspace of Russia, to pass the established line, and in case of detection, to evade pursuit,” the press service said.
To intercept the target from the Anadyr airfield, a MiG-31BM on duty was raised, who, together with ground radars, detected a simulated enemy. After capturing the target, the pilots performed electronic launches of long-range air-to-air missiles.
Since December 1, 2020, in order to strengthen the aviation grouping in the Arctic zone, the crews of the MiG-31BM fighter-interceptors of the Pacific Fleet's naval aviation took up combat duty for air defense at the Anadyr airfield.
The long-range fighter interceptor MiG-31BM has a maximum speed of 3,000 kilometers per hour, a maximum ceiling of up to 30 kilometers, the aircraft's crew consists of two people. The fighter is capable of intercepting cruise missiles.
