Warsaw protests against abortion law

WARSAW, 8 Mar – RIA Novosti. Opponents of tougher abortion laws are holding a street rally in Warsaw, RIA Novosti reports.

The organizer of the action, which is illegal, since there is an epidemic regime throughout Poland and gatherings of more than five people are prohibited, is the Strajk Kobiet (Women's Strike) movement.

Several hundred protesters gathered on the square in front of the central railway station in the center of the Polish capital.

Having entered the roadway, they blocked traffic on the largest transport arteries – Jerusalem alleys and the alleys of John Paul II.

The protesters are shouting “We have the right to protest!”, “Warsaw is ours!”

The police have not yet intervened in the actions of the protesters, only warning them about the illegality of the action and responsibility for violating the epidemic regime.

During the protest, activists of the movement collect signatures for a new law on pregnancy termination.

The draft law, in particular, contains a provision on free termination of pregnancy up to 12 weeks, and in special cases after 12 weeks, on expanding the program of prenatal research.

Since 1993, abortion has been banned in Poland. The only exceptions were cases when pregnancy poses a threat to the life or health of a woman, when there is a high probability of a severe and irreversible fetal development disorder or an incurable disease that threatens his life, and when pregnancy occurred as a result of an illegal act, for example, rape.

The Polish Constitutional Court recently published its decision, which reduced the number of reasons for which abortion is allowed. Now, severe violations in the development of the fetus do not give the woman the right to terminate the pregnancy.
