MOSCOW, 7 Mar – RIA Novosti. The pandemic and forced self-isolation in Spain and in a number of other European countries led to a sharp decline in the birth rate, writes El Pais.
So, according to the newspaper, in Spain, the birth rate in December and January compared with the same period last year decreased by 22.6 percent.
“So far we have data for only two months of 2021. This is not enough to make an accurate forecast for the whole year, but it is already clear that the recession is expected to be strong,” – quotes El Pais director of the Institute of the National Research Council Diego Ramiro.
As noted, a similar situation is observed in other European countries. In December, the number of newborns in Italy compared to the same period last year decreased by 21.6 percent. In France, the birth rate fell 13 percent in January, the newspaper said.
Among the main factors that made people temporarily postpone the decision to create a family, the authors of the publication highlighted a sharp reduction in jobs and a high mortality rate from coronavirus infection.
