Oncologist told why sausage can be more harmful than cigarettes

MOSCOW, 8 March – RIA Novosti. The chief oncologist of SM-Clinic, MD, professor Alexander Seryakov told the Prime agency why sausage can be considered more dangerous than cigarettes.

According to the doctor, already 50 grams of uncooked smoked delicacies are equal in carcinogenicity to a whole pack of cigarettes.

“Studies have shown that eating 50 grams of these processed foods daily increases the risk of colon cancer by 18 percent,” he said.

The interlocutor of the agency recalled that not only sausages, but also processed meat in general – sausages, wieners, ham, canned meat – officially belongs to the carcinogens of the first group, according to the mentioned classification. However, Seryakov noted, it is smoked sausage that can cause particular harm to health.

“The most dangerous from the point of view of carcinogenicity is smoked sausage, as smoking emits smoke, which contains many harmful substances. Such sausage may contain, in addition to nitrites, another substance with proven carcinogenic activity – benzpyrene,” the doctor explained.

He clarified that this substance is released as a result of smoking when the wood used for it decomposes under the influence of temperature.

Health-conscious Russians should think about the process of cooking meat, the doctor warned. The main hazard factor is meat products that have undergone any processing to increase the shelf life or change their taste – heat treatment, smoking, conservation, salting.
