Media: 60 thousand companies were hacked due to vulnerabilities in Microsoft software

MOSCOW, 7 Mar – RIA Novosti. At least 60,000 companies around the world have been hacked due to a vulnerability in Microsoft software, Bloomberg reported, citing a former senior US official familiar with the investigation.

According to the interlocutor of the agency, the cyberattack mainly affected small and medium-sized businesses. Cybersecurity company Huntress noted that hackers tried to break into the systems of banks, electricity suppliers, nursing homes and one ice cream company.

This week Microsoft announced that it had discovered so-called “zero-day vulnerabilities” – bugs in the program that allow you to covertly perform malicious actions.

According to the company, “government-backed” Chinese hackers exploited these vulnerabilities to attack on-premises versions of Microsoft Exchange Server. So they tried to get information from infectious disease researchers, law firms, universities, defense contractors, think tanks and NGOs.

The Chinese authorities have denied accusations of involvement in these hacks and demanded that Microsoft provide evidence instead of baseless guesses.
