Austria stops vaccination with batch of AstraZeneca after death of woman

MOSCOW, 7 Mar – RIA Novosti. As a precaution, the Austrian authorities decided to suspend the use of the batch of AstraZeneca vaccine due to the death of one vaccinated woman and the illness of another, the Austrian Federal Office for Health Safety (BASG) said in a statement.

According to a press release from the department, a 49-year-old woman who received a coronavirus vaccine died as a result of severe bleeding disorders. Another vaccinated woman, aged 35, developed pulmonary embolism and is currently recovering.

Both women received the vaccine from the same batch of the drug at the clinic in Zwettle (Lower Austria).

“There is currently no evidence of a causal relationship with vaccination,” the agency said, pointing out that thrombotic disorders are not among the known side effects of the AstraZeneca vaccine.

According to the statement, an investigation is underway “at full speed” to rule out a link between the deteriorating health status of those vaccinated and vaccinations. At the same time, “for safety reasons” it was decided not to use the rest of the batch of vaccine that was used to vaccinate both women.
