MOSCOW, 5 March – RIA Novosti. The Ukrainian authorities have appealed to the administration of US President Joe Biden with an appeal to introduce a new “comprehensive sanctions regime” against Russia.
As Yulia Sviridenko, deputy head of the office of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said during a videoconference of the Washington Atlantic Council, the new restrictions should include measures against the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. According to her, the termination of this project is “critically important” for Kiev.
“The United States, the European Union and Ukraine must coordinate their position. We must work together to defend democracy, freedom and oppose the authoritarian regime,” UNIAN quotes her.
Sviridenko noted that Kiev is interested in Washington joining negotiations on the situation in Donbass. Also, according to her, Ukraine intends to increase military cooperation with the United States in order to resist “cyber threats, information attacks and propaganda.”
The United States and Ukraine have repeatedly opposed the construction of Nord Stream 2. In December 2019, Washington was already imposing sanctions on the gas pipeline, as a result of which the Swiss Allseas was forced to stop laying.
Russia has repeatedly stressed that the project is commercial and beneficial to Europe. Germany is also in favor of completing the project and rejecting unilateral US extraterritorial sanctions.
