Ukrainian MP punished for trying to speak Russian

MOSCOW, 4 Mar – RIA Novosti. Deputy of the Kharkiv Regional Council from Petro Poroshenko's party “European Solidarity” Alexander Doroshenko was reprimanded for speaking in Russian during the session.

“The actions <...> of Doroshenko contradict the ideological principles of the party and violate the principles that are key for us,” according to the Facebook page of the Kharkiv branch of the party.

It is also noted that the situation with Doroshenko will be urgently considered at the next meeting. He could face expulsion from the faction.

The law “On ensuring the Ukrainian language as the state language” was adopted in April 2019. Within the framework of this law, a special “language commission” appeared in Ukraine, as well as the position of the Commissioner for the Protection of the Language, which is now occupied by Taras Kremin. The document provides for fines for officials for violation of the law. The fine is from 5.1 thousand to 6.8 thousand hryvnia (13 thousand and 18 thousand rubles, respectively). Since January 16, Ukraine has a norm on the compulsory use of the Ukrainian language in the service sector.
