MOSCOW, 4 Mar – RIA Novosti. American entrepreneur, founder of Tesla and SpaceX, Elon Musk, expressed hope for the continued success of the Starship prototypes, despite the third consecutive explosion.
On Thursday, a prototype of SpaceX's long-range spacecraft Starship, launched from a site in Cameron County, Texas, landed successfully, but exploded a few minutes later.
“Starship SN10 has landed safe and sound!” – wrote Musk on Twitter.
“The SpaceX team is doing a tremendous job! One day the real measure of success will be that Starship flights will become commonplace,” the entrepreneur replied to comments under his post.
The SN10 prototype flew about 10 kilometers on a test flight on Thursday, presumably moved fuel, made a U-turn, controlled descent, re-started the engines before landing, and successfully landed.
This is the third Starship launch to an altitude of over 10 kilometers. Previously, launches were carried out on December 10 and February 3, then the missiles exploded and collapsed during landing, however, the tests were still recognized as successful, since the main goal was not landing, but to check the behavior of the rocket in the air: turns, controllability when planning to the earth's surface, operability systems. Musk, even before the start, estimated the probability of a successful landing at the first launch as only one-third.
SpaceX is developing a transportation system consisting of a fully reusable Super Heavy launch vehicle and a Starship spacecraft. The system will make it possible to deliver satellites, crews and cargo both to near-earth orbits and to the Moon and Mars.
