MOSCOW, March 2 – RIA Novosti. The investigation into the case of Ivan Safronov, adviser to the head of Roscosmos, may be completed this summer, his lawyer Ivan Pavlov told RIA Novosti.
“As we were told by the investigator Chaban, the investigation can be completed in June-July this year,” – said the agency's interlocutor.
The Lefortovo Court of Moscow on Tuesday extended Safronov's arrest until May 7.
The former journalist, and now an adviser to the head of Roscosmos, was detained on July 7, 2020, in the evening of the same day, the Lefortovo Court of Moscow placed him in custody.
The FSB charges Safronov with the transfer of classified information about Russian military-technical cooperation and the “defense industry” to one of the NATO special services. Safronov's defense stated that investigators suspect him of working for the Czech special services since 2012.
The case concerns the alleged transfer for mercenary purposes of military-technical information about the supply of weapons to African countries, the final recipients of the classified information were the United States. The former journalist does not admit his guilt.
According to Roskosmos, Safronov's detention is not related to his work at the state corporation. Prior to that, he worked for the Vedomosti and Kommersant newspapers, was engaged in military and space topics. The press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov assured that the detention was also not connected with journalistic activities.
President Vladimir Putin called it “bullshit” the suggestion that the Safronov case was connected with some kind of “conspiracy” against him and ill-wishers from the security forces.
According to the head of state, Safronov “has no enemies,” but the fact that he “collected some information that he should not have passed on to the representatives of the special services, deliberately doing this, is an obvious fact.”
In general, Putin advised to wait until the end of the investigation before drawing conclusions.
