MOSCOW, March 2 – RIA Novosti. The defense will appeal against the court's decision to extend the arrest for two months to the ex-journalist and adviser to the head of Roscosmos, Ivan Safronov, accused of high treason, lawyer Ivan Pavlov told RIA Novosti on Tuesday.
Today the Lefortovo Court of Moscow extended Safronov's arrest until May 7.
“We will appeal this decision,” the agency's interlocutor said.
The former journalist, and now an adviser to the head of Roscosmos, was detained on July 7, 2020, in the evening of the same day, the Lefortovo Court of Moscow placed him in custody.
The FSB charges Safronov with the transfer of classified information about Russian military-technical cooperation and the “defense industry” to one of the NATO special services. Safronov's defense stated that investigators suspect him of working for the Czech special services since 2012.
The case concerns the alleged transfer for mercenary purposes of military-technical information about the supply of weapons to African countries, the final recipients of the classified information were the United States. The former journalist does not admit his guilt.
According to Roskosmos, Safronov's detention is not related to his work at the state corporation. Prior to that, he worked for the Vedomosti and Kommersant newspapers, was engaged in military and space topics. The press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov assured that the detention was also not connected with journalistic activities.
