Border closure will not protect against new strain of coronavirus, doctor says

MOSCOW, March 3 – RIA Novosti. The closure of the borders cannot completely protect the Russian Federation from the appearance on its territory of a new “Nigerian” strain of coronavirus, Sergei Voznesensky, associate professor of the Department of Infectious Diseases of the RUDN University, told RIA Novosti.

Earlier, the president of the Italian Society of Virology, Professor Arnaldo Caruso, told the AdnKronos news agency that Italian microbiologists had discovered in the north of the country, in Brescia (Lombardy region), the “Nigerian” strain of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. Scientists fear that the available vaccines will be ineffective against it.

“To control the infection that is transmitted by airborne droplets using non-specific prophylaxis – closing borders, completely ending relationships, unfortunately, is completely ineffective, because sooner or later there will still be one imported case of infection. “To prepare the healthcare system and increase the number of beds, drugs and specialists. All this will definitely not lead to the fact that the” Nigerian “strain will not appear,” Voznesensky said.

He also noted that fears about the ineffectiveness of the created vaccines against the “Nigerian” strain of coronavirus are premature.
