MOSCOW, March 2 – RIA Novosti. The FSB investigation asks the Lefortovo court in Moscow to extend the arrest of ex-journalist and adviser to the head of Roscosmos Ivan Safronov, who is accused of treason, until May 7, the press service of the court told RIA Novosti.
“The investigation asks the court to extend the measure of restraint for Safronov until May 7, 2021,” the agency's interlocutor said.
The application will be reviewed today.
Safronov was arrested on July 7, 2020, in the evening of the same day, the Lefortovo Court of Moscow placed him in custody.
The FSB charges Safronov with the transfer of classified information about Russian military-technical cooperation and the “defense industry” to one of the NATO special services. Safronov's defense stated that investigators suspect him of working for the Czech special services since 2012. The case concerns the alleged transfer of military-technical information on arms supplies to African countries for mercenary purposes, the final recipients of the classified information were the United States. The former journalist does not admit his guilt.
According to Roskosmos, Safronov's detention is not related to his work at the state corporation. Prior to that, he worked for the Vedomosti and Kommersant newspapers, was engaged in military and space topics. The press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov assured that the detention was also not connected with journalistic activities.
