Jolie sells Churchill painting donated to Roosevelt for $ 11.5 million

MOSCOW, March 2 – RIA Novosti. American actress Angelina Jolie sold the Tower of the Koutoubia Mosque, a painting by former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, which he presented to former US President Franklin Roosevelt, for a record $ 11.5 million for a British statesman (8.28 million pounds), according to the website of the auction house Christie's.

It is reported that the initial cost of the canvas was estimated at 1.5-2.5 million pounds (2-3.4 million dollars).

According to a posting on the auction house's website, the painting was painted and donated to Roosevelt in 1943, and then inherited by his son Elliot. It was later also owned by a number of owners and exhibited at several exhibitions, and was acquired by the Jolie family in 2011. According to Christie's on Twitter, this is the only painting ever painted by Churchill during World War II.

The publication TMZ wrote that the price is a record for the work of a British statesman. Previously, the record for the cost of his work was approximately $ 2.5 million.

The painting depicts a sunset over the largest mosque in Moroccan Marrakech, built in the 12th century, with mountains in the background. Presumably, the British prime minister painted this picture after the Casablanian conference in 1943, and then presented it to the American president as a souvenir.

According to the newspaper, the identity of the buyer is still unknown.
