Mikhail Gorbachev was born on March 2, 1931 in the village of Privolnoye in the Stavropol Territory. He headed the Soviet Union from 1985 to 1991 as General Secretary of the Central Committee of the CPSU, and then as President of the USSR. Laureate of the Nobel Peace Prize (1990). After the signing of the Belovezhskaya Agreements in December 1991, he announced the termination of his presidency. After his resignation, he created the International Foundation for Socio-Economic and Political Research (Gorbachev-Fund), the International Green Cross, founded the Forum for New Politics and was one of the initiators of the creation of the Forum of Nobel Peace Prize Laureates.
