MOSCOW, February 28 – RIA Novosti. US Special Representative for Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad will visit a number of countries in the Middle East region, including Qatar and Afghanistan, Ariana News reported.
In January, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken announced that the new US administration would retain Zalmai Khalilzad as the special envoy for Afghanistan.
The American representative, according to the channel, has already begun his series of visits. He will first travel to Germany, then visit Qatar, Afghanistan, Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and travel to other countries in the region. When exactly he will go there is not reported.
Thus, Khalilzad's “tour” in the Middle East will be his first trip to the region during the administration of US President Joe Biden, Afghan television channel 1TV News notes.
In 2020, in Qatar, the United States and the Afghan radical Taliban signed the first peace agreement in more than 18 years of war, which provides for the withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan in 14 months and the beginning of an inter-Afghan dialogue following a prisoner exchange deal.
