MOSCOW, February 28 – RIA Novosti . Svetlana Bessarab, a State Duma deputy from United Russia, has proposed to ban fishing for killer whales and dolphins for dolphinariums, Izvestia reports.
The parliamentarian has developed an appropriate bill, which is sent to the expert council and is being prepared for the first reading. The document envisages a complete ban on the fishing of marine mammals in Russia, including for cultural and educational purposes.
“Today, catching them for moral and ethical reasons is prohibited in many countries,” Bessarab emphasized.
She also pointed out that scientists do not confirm the therapeutic effect of dolphin therapy and it can be replaced by communication with pets.
According to the publication, the State Duma's specialized committee on ecology and environmental protection received the initiative positively, noting that such measures would benefit nature.
