BERLIN, February 26 – RIA Novosti. The Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project has a political component, it does not contribute to the energy security of Europe, but the European Commission cannot prohibit private companies from investing in it, said EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell.
“The European Commission, of which I am Vice President, has repeatedly and clearly pointed out that Nord Stream 2 does not contribute to either the diversification of energy supply in Europe or the energy independence of the EU. But the EC cannot keep private companies from investing in an industrial project.” Borrell told Spiegel weekly.
He added that he did not agree with the position of the German government, which considers Nord Stream 2 as a purely economic project, pointing out that “there are no purely economic projects of this scale, they always have a geopolitical component.”
