MOSCOW, February 26 – RIA Novosti. Attempts to change the status of the Crimean peninsula are doomed to failure, the Russian embassy in Ukraine said in a statement.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in an address on Friday on his YouTube channel, said that Crimea was the heart of Ukraine, and its entry into Russia “ripped out the heart” of the country, and the rights of Crimeans are being violated. Earlier, US President Joe Biden said that the United States would never recognize Crimea as Russian and would continue to work to bring Russia to justice for the “aggression” in Ukraine.
“We are forced to state that despite our repeated explanations of the essence of the circumstances of Crimea's joining Russia, the Ukrainian side, with the support of the leadership of the embassies of a number of Western states accredited in Kiev, continues propaganda attacks in order to question the legitimate choice made by the residents of the peninsula at the 2014 popular referendum, and denigrate the positive changes in their lives in recent years, “- noted in the Russian diplomatic mission in Ukraine.
“We are convinced that the attempts of our partners to change the status of the Crimean peninsula are doomed to failure. The Crimeans have finally decided on their fate and will not turn away from their chosen path,” the message says.
The Russian Embassy recalled that the decision of the Crimeans to reunite with Russia was “a response to the coup d'état orchestrated and financed by the West in Kiev and the unconstitutional overthrow of the legally elected government, as well as to threats from militant nationalists to force their who disagree with them, “and a referendum on the status of the peninsula was held in full compliance with international law.
“Despite attempts from the outside to create artificial obstacles to the normal life of Crimea, at present it is one of the most dynamically developing Russian regions. A stable economic growth is recorded, housing construction, industrial production, agriculture are gaining momentum, the resort and tourism sector is strengthening,” noted in the message.
At the same time, it is indicated that in Crimea there are no problems in interethnic and interfaith relations, and the authorities are substantively engaged in ensuring the cultural, religious and other interests of all national minorities, including the Crimean Tatars.
“Taking into account the above, we do not see any grounds for sharp criticism of the state of affairs on the peninsula and the actions of the authorities to ensure the necessary steps for its sustainable development. We call on the Ukrainian officials and the diplomats of Western countries who are in solidarity with them to abandon the biased, having no relation to reality assessments of the situation in Crimea, stop confrontational attacks and return to the restoration of a constructive Russian-Ukrainian dialogue, taking into account the new realities, “the diplomatic mission said.
Crimea became a Russian region after a referendum was held there in March 2014, in which 96.77% of Crimean voters and 95.6% of Sevastopol residents spoke out in favor of joining Russia. Crimean authorities held a referendum following a coup d'etat in Ukraine in February 2014. Ukraine still considers Crimea to be its own, but temporarily occupied territory. The Russian leadership has repeatedly stated that the inhabitants of Crimea democratically, in full compliance with international law and the UN Charter, voted for reunification with Russia. According to Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Crimea issue is “finally closed.”
