Biden said the US will never recognize Crimea as Russian

MOSCOW, February 26 – RIA Novosti. American President Joe Biden said that the United States will never recognize Crimea as Russian, Washington will continue to work to bring Russia to justice for the “aggression” in Ukraine.

“On this dark anniversary, we repeat a simple truth: Crimea is Ukraine. The US does not and will never recognize the so-called annexation of the peninsula by Russia, and we will work together with Ukraine to oppose Russia's aggressive actions. We will continue to work to hold Russia accountable for its abuses and aggression in Ukraine, “the statement on the White House website says.

According to the US President, Russia seven years ago “violated international law, the norms by which modern countries interact with each other, as well as the sovereignty and territorial integrity of neighboring Ukraine” by the annexation of Crimea.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has repeatedly stated that Russia is doing everything that is in accordance with international law, the UN Charter, respects the right of any people to determine its own destiny, this applies to the rights of national minorities, whether in Crimea or anywhere else. And the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova said on Friday that Moscow is always ready to accept any international control mechanisms in the field of human rights in Crimea.

Crimea became a Russian region after a referendum was held there in March 2014, in which 96.77% of Crimean voters and 95.6% of Sevastopol residents spoke out in favor of joining Russia. Ukraine still considers Crimea to be its own, but temporarily occupied territory. The Russian leadership has repeatedly stated that the inhabitants of Crimea democratically, in full compliance with international law and the UN Charter, voted for reunification with Russia. According to the Russian president, the Crimea issue is “finally closed.”
