Low temperatures, wind, snowstorm and heavy precipitation in the Urals are associated with a strong difference in atmospheric pressure in the cyclone to the west of the region and in the anticyclone to the east, Roman Vilfand, scientific director of the Hydrometeorological Center, told RIA Novosti.
“The weather in the Urals is very difficult: in the Chelyabinsk and Kurgan regions. What is the reason for this? A deep cyclone to the west of the Urals and a powerful anticyclone in the other direction, which yesterday and today determines the cold weather in European territory. There is a very big pressure difference between them … There are powerful north winds in the rear of the cyclone and they are caused by the horizontal pressure drop, “Vilfand explained.
In addition, in the rear of the cyclone, precipitation of water vapor, heavy rainfall and wind, snow, blizzard and drifts on the roads occur.
“Gradually the high pressure area is moving to the east and we can say that tomorrow afternoon the situation will improve significantly,” said Wilfand.
