Biden extends Trump sanctions against Cuba

WASHINGTON, 25 Feb – RIA Novosti. US President Joe Biden has extended sanctions against Cuba, the White House said.

We are talking about the 1996 sanctions regime, amended in 2004, 2016 and 2018.

In particular, Biden confirmed the prohibition of US-registered ships from entering Cuba's territorial waters without the permission of the US authorities, as this could lead to “mass migration from Cuba.”

The Barack Obama administration, under which Biden was vice president, has lifted a number of sanctions against Cuba and has taken steps to improve relations. Under Donald Trump, the United States returned many sanctions against Cuba. At the same time, the trade embargo imposed by Congress has remained unchanged for more than half a century. Biden has not yet taken any steps indicating a revision of Trump's policy towards Cuba.
