MOSCOW, February 24 – RIA Novosti. LDPR leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky opposed the installation of any monument on Lubyanskaya Square in Moscow. “Let there be either a flower bed or a small fountain on Lubyanskaya Square. In general, there is no need to erect monuments to anyone, no need to turn our cities into cemeteries,” the politician said on the air of the TV channel “Russia 24”.
Earlier, writers, bloggers and journalists signed an appeal to the Moscow authorities to return the monument to Felix Dzerzhinsky to Lubyanka Square. The head of the Moscow City Duma Commission on Culture and Mass Communications Yevgeny Gerasimov told RIA Novosti that the decision to return the monument should be made taking into account the opinion of Muscovites.
In turn, the deputy chairman of the Public Chamber of Moscow, Alexei Venediktov, told RIA Novosti that the vote on the installation of the monument on Lubyanskaya Square will be launched on February 25 at several sites – on the basis of Active Citizen and the websites of various media outlets. He clarified that there will be two options – a monument to Dzerzhinsky or Alexander Nevsky, the option to leave Lubyanskaya Square in its former form, according to him, is not being considered.
