MOSCOW, February 24 – RIA Novosti. Kiev's sanctions against the Sportmaster network may have negative consequences for Ukraine, political scientist and economist Taras Zagorodny said in an interview with Glavred.
Private limited company Sportmaster Operations Pte. Ltd was previously included in the list of sanctions imposed by the decree of President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky against individuals and legal entities, the company was banned from conducting trade operations and withdrawing capital outside the country.
“The sanctions against legal entities are the old Ukrainian showdown, during which they will simply tear up assets. In my opinion, sanctions against Sportmaster will bring us much more problems,” he said.
According to him, despite the fact that the company is run by Russians, it is registered in Singapore.
“At the same time, Ukraine once signed an agreement on the protection of investments. Thus, Singapore has a reason to sue Ukraine, which it may well win,” the economist said.
He added that this story “will hit the investment attractiveness” of Ukraine. “It will look like pure lobbying of structures that wished to oust competitors from the Ukrainian market,” Zagorodny concluded.
In total, the latest sanctions list includes 19 legal entities and eight individuals, including Viktor Medvedchuk, a deputy from the Opposition Platform – For Life, and his wife Oksana Marchenko.
