MOSCOW, February 24 – RIA Novosti. The erection of a monument to Prince Alexander Nevsky on Lubyanskaya Square in Moscow may become a symbol of a return to the great cultural and historical heritage of the Russian people, says Andrey Batalov, deputy director general for scientific work of the Moscow Kremlin Museums.
Earlier, writers, bloggers and journalists signed an appeal to the Moscow authorities to return the monument to Felix Dzerzhinsky to Lubyanka Square. The head of the Moscow City Duma Commission on Culture and Mass Communications Yevgeny Gerasimov told RIA Novosti that the decision to return the monument should be made taking into account the opinion of Muscovites. In turn, the deputy chairman of the Public Chamber of Moscow, Alexei Venediktov, told RIA Novosti that the vote on the installation of the monument on Lubyanskaya Square will be launched on February 25 at several sites – on the basis of Active Citizen and the websites of various media outlets. He clarified that there will be two options – a monument to Dzerzhinsky or Alexander Nevsky, the option to leave Lubyanskaya Square in its former form, according to him, is not being considered.
“Alexander Nevsky is the hero-defender of the Russian land from the invaders. He was like that for all Soviet citizens during the Great Patriotic War, thanks to (film director – ed.) Sergei Eisenstein, his image was in everyone's heart. And he was not part of Soviet propaganda, but a part of great Russia, which everyone kept in his heart, therefore, the installation of the monument to Alexander Nevsky will first of all be a symbol of our return to the great cultural and historical heritage of the Russian people, “Batalov told RIA Novosti.
In Russia, according to the decree of President Vladimir Putin, in 2021 the 800th anniversary of the birth of Prince Alexander Nevsky is celebrated. Festive events will also take place in the Russian Orthodox Church, which canonized Nevsky.
