MOSCOW, February 24 – RIA Novosti. The American edition of The National Interest has called the imminent completion of the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline another victory for Vladimir Putin.
“Russia already controls about forty percent of the European gas market, and this share will only increase,” the authors wrote, noting that the project would cause long-term damage to relations between the US and Europe.
In their opinion, the Russian side allegedly perceives its energy resources as a political weapon. As a result, according to the article, some European countries cooperating with Moscow are forced to abandon their own ambitions and aspirations “to join the Western alliances.”
“The Nord Stream 2 pipeline is an insurmountable obstacle to the energy diversity and energy security of the European Union,” the article says.
In conclusion, the authors recommend that readers ask themselves why key EU members intend to support the Russian economy instead of arguing about the illegality of US sanctions against the project.
The United States, which is promoting its liquefied natural gas, as well as Ukraine and a number of European countries have repeatedly opposed Nord Stream 2. In December 2019, Washington imposed sanctions on the pipeline. Russia has repeatedly noted that the project is commercial and beneficial to Europe. Germany also favors the completion of the pipeline and rejects unilateral US extraterritorial sanctions.
