The number of deaths in the United States from COVID-19 exceeded 500 thousand people

MOSCOW, February 23 – RIA Novosti. The number of deaths from coronavirus in the United States has exceeded half a million, according to Johns Hopkins University, which summarizes data from federal and local authorities, as well as the media and other open sources.

As of 0.40 Moscow time, 500,071 patients with confirmed COVID-19 have died in the United States, making them the leader in the number of deaths among all countries. The total number of coronavirus cases in the United States exceeds 28 million.

According to The New York Times, the number of Americans who died from COVID-19 has already exceeded the country's combat losses in the Vietnam War, as well as in the First and Second World Wars. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, 392,300 Americans have died as a result of these three conflicts.

In addition, according to Johns Hopkins University, the United States was the most affected by the pandemic. The maximum daily increase in cases was recorded on January 2 – then almost 300 thousand infected were identified.

US President Joe Biden on Monday declared mourning in memory of the 500,000 Americans who have died from the coronavirus. Flags across the country will be at half-mast for five days.

On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization declared the outbreak of the new coronavirus infection COVID-19 a pandemic.

The three countries with the highest number of deaths from COVID-19, in addition to the United States, also include Brazil (246.5 thousand patients) and Mexico (180.1 thousand). In Russia, the coronavirus has caused the death of 83.6 thousand people.
