BEIJING, 23 Feb – RIA Novosti. The reason for the revocation of the license for broadcasting in the UK from the Chinese television channel CGTN does not look convincing, the separation of content production and broadcasting has now become commonplace for the media, Wu Fei, professor at the Institute of Journalism and Communication at Jinan University, told RIA Novosti.
In February, British media regulator Ofcom revoked the license of the Chinese TV channel CGTN for not complying with the requirements for a license holder. After that, the General Directorate of Radio and Television of China announced a ban on broadcasting BBC World News in the country due to “violation of reporting requirements” and “undermining the national interests of the PRC.”
Wu Fay pointed out that the UK revoked the CGTN license due to the fact that different companies are responsible for broadcasting the channel and creating its content, that is, the owner of the broadcasting license does not control what is broadcast. “However, in line with the current needs of converged media, content creation, whether news or programs, and broadcasting are separated, is a general international trend,” the analyst said.
The expert explained that, for example, for broadcasting in hotels in mainland China and even Hong Kong, the same BBC TV channel needs to find an agent, the separation of production and broadcasting is a normal phenomenon in the current environment. “Therefore, the reason why CGTN's license in the UK was revoked is not convincing,” Wu Fei said.
Commenting on the claims that CGTN violates the principles of impartiality, honesty and personal secrecy, as well as similar accusations of the Chinese regulator against the BBC, the expert said that the nature of the work of CGTN and BBC are identical – both channels are the “voice” of their countries. “If the UK accuses China of violating the truthfulness, impartiality and integrity of the news, then the BBC will have the same problem. Both channels are fulfilling their responsibilities and following their own news requirements when it comes to the BBC's“ voice ”and“ voice ”distribution. China channel CGTN “, – said the source of the agency.
He added that CGTN, by spreading the “voice” of China, does not interfere in the internal affairs of Great Britain, and the BBC provides “a lot of inappropriate assessments of China's domestic policy, including the Hong Kong issue.” “Thus, CGTN in its reports only spreads the” voice “of China, and the BBC not only spreads the” voice “of Great Britain, but also unreasonably condemns and criticizes the internal affairs of other countries … CGTN at least did not harm the state interests of Great Britain,” he stressed analyst.
