MOSCOW, February 23 – RIA Novosti. The combination of severe frosts and precipitation this winter is associated with the onset of a new climatic era, Tatyana Pozdnyakova, chief specialist of the Moscow and regional meteorological office, told Rossiyskaya Gazeta.
“The outgoing February is a very unusual month, it is quite cold and at the same time snowy, usually in the winter season these characteristics do not mix well,” said the meteorologist.
According to Pozdnyakova's forecasts, abnormal weather will continue in the last week of February – on Wednesday and Thursday heavy snowfalls will cover the capital, then it will warm to zero, and then frosts will reach 25 degrees.
“As a result, as expected, the average monthly air temperature in February will be four degrees below normal,” she added.
The specialist recalled that similar deviations from the norm were already in 2012, but then there was less rainfall. She explained that the combination of frost and precipitation is not typical for winter: previously, cyclones went from west to east, due to which there were severe cold in the north, moderate weather remained in central Russia, and it was warm in the south. Now cyclones go from north to south and from south to north. This, according to Pozdnyakova, explains the heavy snowfalls this month and last year's “tropical” showers in the spring and summer.
“There is a pronounced meridianality of the atmospheric circulation. This can only indicate that the climate is changing, another climatic epoch has begun,” the specialist said.
At the same time, the meteorologist stressed that the new era began not this year, it is a gradual process that began five to seven years ago.
“I do not exclude that in the coming years there may be even more weather cataclysms,” she concluded.
