KALININGRAD, 23 Feb – RIA Novosti. The first amber nugget found by employees of the Kaliningrad Amber Combine in 2021 was named in honor of Defender of the Fatherland Day, the press service of the enterprise told reporters.

A nugget weighing 1313 grams was discovered on Sunday by a bulldozer driver near a walking excavator, which is used to extract amber. Names are assigned to unique stones weighing over a kilogram – such a tradition appeared at the plant in 2018. With a difference of five minutes, several more large amber stones were found in another part of the quarry. The total weight of the raw amber found was 1682 grams.
As noted in the press service, the finds were made before the start of the amber mining season. During the cold season, the quarry is not mined, but other work is underway to maintain the face in proper condition and prepare for the new season. Traditionally, amber mining starts in late March – early April.
In 2020, an absolute record was set for the number of nuggets mined per season – their number reached 20. In 2017–2019, 17–18 such stones were mined, and before that the number of amber heavyweights did not exceed 5–6 per year.
JSC “Kaliningrad Amber Factory” was founded on July 21, 1947 on the basis of the Konigsberg Amber Manufactory. The Amber Combine is the only industrial enterprise in Russia and the largest in the world for the extraction of amber, located in the village of Yantarny, Kaliningrad Region, where about 90% of the world's amber reserves are concentrated. In 2013, according to the decree of the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, the plant was transferred to the management of the state corporation Rostec. In 2020, 525 tons of amber were mined, which was a historical maximum in terms of production volumes.
