MOSCOW, February 22 – RIA Novosti. LDPR leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky proposed to introduce weight restrictions for Russians and officials.
As the politician said on the air of the Komsomolskaya Pravda radio, the state has to spend a lot of money on overweight citizens, their “treatment and diet.” At the same time, the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia called for officials to set a standard for weight of one hundred kilograms.
As a preventive measure against obesity, Zhirinovsky also suggested that the authorities give Russians recommendations on a healthy lifestyle.
Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Deputy of the State Duma Gennady Onishchenko believes that there are such professions for which height and weight are of great importance, for example, for astronauts, but setting certain weight limits for officials is unacceptable from the point of view of human rights.
Onishchenko noted that the issue of overweight is very important, since it is a sign of ill health, but it would be more correct not to set a specific norm, but to recommend a weight that corresponds to the height and physical makeup of a person.
The academician stressed that the idea of keeping track of weight would be useful for people of all professions.
In turn, Deputy Speaker of the State Duma Igor Lebedev (LDPR) told RIA Novosti that the party's election program will not include an item on limiting the weight of officials, as for extending this requirement to candidates for State Duma deputies, they will start with Zhirinovsky himself.
Nutritionist Natalia Grigorieva criticized Zhirinovsky's proposal. “These are some kind of illiterate recommendations. Zhirinovsky is just hyping, that's all, making himself an expert,” she said in an interview with REN TV.
According to the doctor, in medicine there is a concept of body mass index (BMI), and to assess the risks of sudden death, diabetes mellitus, the waist is used.
“It's just that the weight indicator is not a criterion. There are a lot of people who are not overweight, but the same officials have a lot of other problems. Vascular pathologies, with the same cholesterol,” Grigorieva added.
