MOSCOW, February 19 – RIA Novosti. MMC Norilsk Nickel decided not to appeal the court decision on compensation for damage in the amount of 146.2 billion rubles due to the accident at the thermal power plant in Norilsk, according to the company's website.
“After careful consideration of the judgment and on the basis of recommendations from internal and external experts, the company decided not to appeal,” commented Gareth Penny, chairman of the board of directors of the company.
“We welcome this decision as it will allow the company to move forward and focus on implementing the ambitious sustainability strategy that was presented to the investment community last December. On behalf of the board of directors, I can confirm that we fully support management's efforts and appreciate the commitment all these goals, “he added.
MMC Norilsk Nickel announced earlier Friday that it would pay this compensation. And the deputy head of Rusal (one of the main shareholders of the MMC) Maxim Poletaev specified that the payment will be made at the expense of the reserve created last year, which reduced the EBITDA calculated for dividends, and other changes in payments to shareholders are not expected.
